Let's Beat Bowel Cancer have teamed up with Bowel Cancer Australia for FOBruary to raise awareness of bowel cancer and encourage more Australians to test for the disease.
FOBruary calls on Australians aged 50 and over to have a FOB Test (Faecal Occult Blood Test) during the month of February to screen for bowel cancer – Australia’s second biggest cancer killer.
Bowel cancer is preventable, treatable and beatable if detected early.
Screening involves a test for bowel cancer in people who do not have symptoms of the disease. The aim is to find any polyps or cancer early when it is easier to treat than at advanced stages.
With a FOB Test, screening for bowel cancer is as easy as Dip. Drop. Done – you just dip the brush in the loo, dab the toilet water on the test card, drop the card in the post and you’re done. It’s that simple.
If you’re 50 and over, you need to screen every 1 to 2 years …it could save your life.
If detected early, around 90 per cent of bowel cancer cases can be treated successfully. However, fewer than 40 per cent of bowel cancers are detected early.
