Bowel Cancer Screening Test

Let’s Beat Bowel Cancer recommends screening for bowel cancer before symptoms become present as bowel cancer can develop without any early warning signs.

Screening is the testing of people to detect disease early before there are any obvious symptoms. Research shows that early screening for bowel cancer does help reduce death rates by finding and treating bowel cancer early. Screening saves lives.

There are multiple ways to obtain a screening test including:

National Bowel Cancer Screening Program (NBCSP)

The Australian Government currently offers free screening tests to Australians turning 50 to 70 years of age. Eligible Australians who hold a Medicare card or Veterans Affairs card will automatically receive a free test kit in the mail around the time of their birthday.

For more information about the NBCSP please visit here.

General Practitioners or Pharmacists

Your GP may be able to provide you with a bowel screening test and advise on possible Medicare rebates that may be available.

If you have any questions regarding which is the best bowel screening program to participate in based on your own circumstances, please speak to your GP.

Community Pharmacies

The BowelScreen Australia® test kits can be obtained from participating community pharmacies. They cost around $40 and are clinically proven, accurate and reliable. The kit comes complete with full instructions, a dedicated customer helpline, and an annual reminder service.
